The Challenge
Originally built in 1898 to provide access to tunnels beneath the Clyde, the South Rotunda lay derelict aside from a brief, temporary use during the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. Following purchase by the Malin Group in 2015, G.D. Lodge prepared proposals for building’s conservation and conversion to provide a new, unique headquarters building over five new levels inserted within the building’s shell.
The Response
Our design has completely transformed the interior, with an optimised layout using a single stair and floor plates positioned on staggered levels, to create a magical series of spaces, culminating in a circular galley within the domed roof. Work involved comprehensive repairs and enhancements to brick, stone & wrought iron elements, new heritage windows & rooflights with new roof slating and replica cupola with weather vane.
