The Challenge
The House for an Art Lover was originally designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh as a competition entry, but never built. We were approached by Glasgow City Council to act as lead architect on a remarkable project to recreate the original vision. Our starting point was to take over a half-built building shell which had been started by others before they ran into financial difficulty.
The Response
This unique opportunity involved an interesting mix of normal architectural duties, in depth historical research and close collaboration with representatives from Glasgow School of Art, The Chalres Rennie Mackintosh Society, Glasgow Museums and many local artists & craftsmen. This boutique facility comprises 21,500 sq.ft. of contemporary educational areas, a public museum, visitor centre, a function suite/ wedding venue with shop, café and exhibition facilities. The highlights of the visitor experience are the recreated Mackintosh Rooms on the principal level which have been painstakingly created in accordance with original designs prepared by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
